We all know that following a weight loss regime can be kind of difficult and let’s face it: Extremely Frustrating at times! You put so much effort into eating less, exercising more and even refuse to eat certain foods, but still when you look down at that stupid scale, it still has not budged… It’s so discouraging! Isn’t it? I guess no one ever really said that losing weight was going to be easy but if others can do it, so can you. You just got to toughen up, keep it up and keep on going all the way until you reach your goal. It’s going to take time so be patient. There are going to be slip ups and I’m sure you have also even committed a few weight loss crimes along the way. To make sure that you get where you want to go, take a look at a few classic weight loss mistakes that most of us are guilty of and learn how to avoid them.
Keeping your diet a secret
Don’t keep your weight loss journey a secret! Be open about it. Let your family, friends and colleagues know that you are trying to shed a few pounds. We tend to keep diets on the down low to first make sure that it’s actually working, because that way, if we do fail, well at least no one knew anyway. Right? No! That’s not the way to go… By letting everybody know, they will avoid tempting you with foods that you cannot eat. You will also be gaining a support team that will be able to motivate you along the way.
Relying on willpower
If you think that you can get through this journey solely on willpower… Good luck! And more power to you! But most of us get sucked into temptations. You know, like when the bag of chips and the tub of ice cream have been starring at you for the past hour and suddenly you crack? No more! Grab the garbage bags; it’s time to ditch the temptations! Out of sight, out of mind!
Giving your lifestyle a complete makeover
Baby steps grasshopper! Rome wasn’t built in a day! Start by making small, subtle changes in your life before overhauling the whole thing at once. Although change is good, too much can be disastrous. Small achievements will lead to long-term success.
Nobody’s perfect! Having an all or nothing attitude is not going to get you anywhere. It’s not because you have one tiny slip up one Saturday night that you have failed. So you indulged a little bit more than you should have… Who cares! You just get right back on that saddle and keep on trotting. It’s probably not the first and it won’t be your last slip up either. So, get use to it! It’s completely normal.
This has got to be the worst dieting mistakes EVER! Going on a diet does not mean: starve yourself! Skipping meals will eventually lead to binge eating. Now that’s just bad news bears! It’s not the frequency of meals that will make you fat, it’s the content of meals that can make you fat! So, go ahead and eat every 2-4 hours if you want to. As long as you are not surpassing your daily calorie intake you’re not going to not lose weight. Actually, by eating more frequently, your body will learn to control and regulate your metabolism. Always have a snack at hand in times of emergencies!
Doing it alone
Find a buddy! Pick a friend that shares the same weight loss goals as you do and begin the journey together. This will raise awareness, accountability, motivation and encouragement.
Expecting instant results
“I have been dieting all morning… Am I skinny yet?” Unless you can waive a magic wand, this is not going to happen. Take your time and get confortable being uncomfortable. It’s a process; you’ll get there!
Cutting out your favourite foods
It is so unnecessary to cut out your favourite foods. Ok, so you probably can’t eat the same version of it while dieting however, you can make healthier alternatives. The Internet is so accessible these days, so there are no excuses. Try it out! You will be surprised at what you may find.
Stepping on the scale every minute
Get off of it already! Morning, afternoon evening… Give it a break or you are going to drive yourself bananas! It’s normal that your weight fluctuates throughout the day so stop being so alarmed when you hop on mid afternoon for a peeksy and see that you’ve gained 2 lbs. Relax. Instead of monitoring that number like you just had a newborn baby, schedule a special time ONCE a week to weigh yourself in and don’t look back until the next (preferably in the morning).
