We often read about tips and tricks on how to lose weight or even what we should eat in order to maintain that weight however, nobody ever really tackles the real subject: Kitchen Gear. The key to success is sometimes just going back to the basics. Without the proper tools, you may be setting yourself up for failure. Certain tools are essential in the kitchen in order to succeed throughout your weight loss journey. With the right gear, you will be able to facilitate your weight loss goals and you will also be able to learn new culinary skills that will follow you forever. Don’t underestimate the power of your kitchen tools! Take a look at what YOU need in your kitchen today:
Blender – Blenders are great for smoothies, soups, sauces, vinaigrettes, you name it, the blender can take it!
Cutting Boards – You should have a wide variety of different cutting boards in your cupboard. I like to have a large wooden one and a large plastic one along with 4-5 smaller boards (wooden and plastic). You want to have several boards at hand so that you don’t constantly have to wash the same board throughout food preparation. It’s important to also designate a “meat only” board to avoid food contamination.
Wooden Spoons – Wooden Spoons are universal! They can be used for basically anything and the best part is that they won’t ruin your pots and pans! Wooden spoons are best for stirring sauces and soups.
Chef’s Knife and Paring Knife – Invest in one good chef’s knife along with one good paring knife. Cutting meat, poultry and prepping veggies will be so much easier!
Tongs – Tongs are your best friends once you learn to use them properly. They are not only for cooking meat on the barbeque! They are actually the perfect tool for searing any kind of protein in a pan! Most of us already have a pair of metal tongs however, I do suggest getting a pair of heat resistant rubber tip tongs so that you can save your pans from scratches.
Mixing Bowls – All kinds of different sizes but preferably metal or glass – ideally no plastic if possible.
Non-Stick Pots and Pans – So essential! They do not have to be expensive but they do need to be non-stick and able to take high heat. There are many different kinds of pots and pans depending on your price range. Take a look at Chef Verati’s video where he talks about a variety of different kinds of pots and pans available to you.
Oil Sprayer – An oil sprayer is so useful and helps you better control the amount of fat that you are adding to your dishes. There are lots of different kinds of oil mist sprays to choose from depending on your choice of cooking oil. I recommend cooking at high temperatures with grapeseed oil and low temperatures with olive oil.
Food Scale – A good food scale is an awesome tool to be able to control portion sizes. Plate sizes can be deceiving at times so it’s important to know exactly how much is a correct serving at all times.
Storage containers – Lots and lots of storage containers! You can NEVER have too much! From Tupperware to Pyrex, stock up! I personally prefer using glass storage containers because it is simply better for the body however, it can be expensive so go ahead and start off with a set of plastic Containers. If you really want to go with glass try using mason jars. They are a great inexpensive way to utilize glass containers.
Baking Sheets – You are going to need a baking sheet! Perfect for roasting veggies, baking chicken and making my favorite: Rutabaga Fries! Yummm!
Spatula – Get some fun and colourful heat resistant spatulas! You will love using them with your pans and skillets.
Vegetable Steamer – You have just got to have a vegetable steamer! It will make your life so much easier…
Measuring Cups & Spoons – No more eye balling it!
