Why You Want to Avoid Processed Low-Fat “Diet” Foods for Successful Weight Loss and A Healthy Lifestyle

Despite their labels, many foods with “low-fat” and “diet” branding can do more harm than good when it comes to overall health and successful weight loss. These foods often contain synthetic ingredients with chemicals that can be harmful to your body. In some cases, these additives don’t even come close to providing the nutrition of a healthy diet. These processed “diet” foods also only provide temporary weight loss solutions, but could wind up damaging your health in the long run. For lasting weight loss and a healthy lifestyle, avoid these quick-fix diet foods and follow a balanced low-fat diet filled with fresh and unprocessed foods.

Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are found in many processed low-fat diet foods. They replace sugar without sacrificing the sweetness so many expect. The most common artificial sweeteners are:

  • acesulfame
  • aspartame
  • neotame
  • saccharin

Although these sweeteners are often branded as having “zero calories,” they all too often create more problems in the long run. Aspartame is one of the leading carcinogenic (cancer-causing) artificial sweeteners found in many diet foods.

Another problem with certain artificially sweetened diet foods is that people will often convince themselves that they can eat an unhealthy treat as a reward since they are deemed “healthier” diet foods. They may also associate these sweet foods with low calories and, in time, eat more unhealthy foods that will lead to weight gain.

Palates may also become desensitized by these sweeter substitutes, resulting in cravings for more sugary foods and not being satisfied with the taste of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables.

Food Supplements

Many diet food supplements and meal replacements are also made with artificial sweeteners and synthetic ingredients that are both unhealthy and have less nutritional value than fresh whole foods. While there are numerous meal replacements based on valid nutritional advice, too many less-than-reputable producers pack their supplements with sugary carbs to make people feel full.

What’s more, unless they’re demonstrably sugar-free, you can bet they’re packed full of the sweet stuff. Many, but not all, of these quick-and-easy food supplements can only provide temporary weight loss solutions, as the cost of overall health. For long-term weight control, a change in overall lifestyle and a healthy diet with real food must be followed.

Although processed low-fat “diet” foods may seem like a quick and easy fix for your weight loss goals, they can be more harmful to your health, and are only a temporary solution at best. There are many delicious and healthy low-fat foods that are both unprocessed and affordable, and that will also keep you on the right track to weight control and a healthy lifestyle. If you’re looking for the best way to lose weight and be healthy, talk to a health coach, nutritionist, or dietitian. They’ll be able to guide you and coach you through your weight-loss process in the most efficient and healthy way possible.
