Have you ever had dinner and felt really hungry only a couple of hours later? I have, more often than I think is normal. I just can’t help it though. Right before bed, my tummy is rumbling and my brain is begging for a little snack before bedtime. Is it just a habit? Maybe… But, I like it nonetheless. There is just something about it. I’m sure you know the feeling. The dishes are done, the house is clean, my PJs are on and now it’s my time to relax. Nothing better than curling up in front of the TV with a little blanky and munching on some goodies. Let’s be serious though some snacks are “healthier” than others and only you can make the decision as to what you put in your body.
So, is it better to simply ditch the late night snack? Or, is it ok?
I’m kind of on the fence with this one since there seems to be no black or white answer to this question. Regardless, if you are dieting or not. I think it all depends on your own personal habits and goals. If you think about it, eating late at night won’t cause you to gain weight as long as you haven’t exceeded your total daily calorie intake. Don’t let that fool you though! That does not mean that because you skipped out on dinner you can now devour a whole tub of ice cream with cookies on the side… The last thing you want is to eat too much of a bad thing right before bed creating discomfort and indigestion. You may not realize it however you will not get a good night sleep and you will wake up feeling exhausted and perhaps even nauseous. You also don’t want to eat so much that you are not hungry for breakfast in the morning because this may ruin your metabolism. So, be aware of what you are eating and conscious of how much you are eating as well.
You don’t want to starve yourself either though. If you are having difficulty sleeping or staying asleep because you are that hungry, then EAT! You don’t want to deprive yourself because that will eventually backfire and lead you to a binger! And… we don’t want that now do we…
Find a solution that suits your daily habits. By eating three well balanced meals per day, you should feel satisfied longer. But if having a bedtime snack is something that you are not ready to give up, I don’t think you should have to.
