Make the Most of Your Fridge Space While Following a Low-Carb Meal Plan

Most people organize their fridge the same way that their parents did. These food storage habits were often influenced by older technologies and passed down to younger generations. When you are following a low-fat diet plan for your meals, though, it’s important that you store foods like fruits and vegetables as efficiently as possible. This will help them stay fresh longer, making meals as enjoyable as possible. Here is what you should be storing in the different areas of your fridge:

Upper Shelf

The top of your fridge is the second-warmest space in the fridge and sees more changes in temperature when the door opens. This is a great place to keep condiments that don’t fit in the door, as well as berries, herbs, soft cheese, and deli meat. Most foods that you have ready to eat in a low-carb meal plan can be stored here.

Middle Shelf

This area holds a stable temperature, making it the ideal place to store eggs, drinks like water and pop, and leftovers from previous low fat diet meals. You can also use this space for overflow items that don’t fit on the lower or upper shelves.

Bottom Shelf

The bottom shelf is the coldest part of the fridge. This is where you will want to store milk and milk products like yogurt, sour cream, and cottage cheese. This also makes it the best place to store packaged raw meat and any fresh, unpasteurized juices. Try to store meat as low as possible so it does not contaminate other foods. If your fridge has humidity drawers below the bottom shelf, make sure you are placing raw meat in a plastic bin to catch any juices.

High-Humidity Drawer

Whichever drawer that is set to the highest humidity is the best place to store your vegetables. If your low-fat diet plan has a lot of vegetables, you may need to store extras on the bottom shelf. Vegetables like onions, potatoes, and squash don’t need to be refrigerated.

Low-Humidity Drawer

The drawer with the lowest humidity is ideal for storing most fruits theses are common in low-carb meal plans. The only exceptions are bananas, berries, and tomatoes. Bananas should be separated as much as possible to slow down the ripening process, and the flavor and texture of tomatoes change when they are in the fridge.

In the Door

The door is the warmest storage area in the ridge. Here you will want to keep any condiments that fit into your low-fat diet plan like ketchup, mustard, nut butters, and pickles. This is also a great place for water and pasteurized juices.
