I have referred to myself as the ‘organic fat girl’ many times in my life.  I was the one making ‘healthy choices’ 99% of the time, and I still wore a size 16!  I didn’t know how to eat badly. I didn’t want to eat badly.  I wanted to be healthy and smaller.
There are many foods in the stores, including health food stores that seem healthy at first glance. I have learned to look at the labels differently than I did before. I used to look only at the TOP of the label where it said fat, carbs, calories, and sugars. But, then I started to read the actual ingredients of those products, which is located at the BOTTOM of the item. It is surprising what you will find. Many times I saw that something I thought was good for me, actually had some hidden sugars it in.
Sugar hides under many names like dextrose, brown sugar, cane crystals, cane sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, crystal dextrose, evaporated cane juice, fructose sweetener, fruit juice concentrates, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, liquid fructose, malt syrup, maple syrup, molasses, pancake syrup, raw sugar, sugar, syrup and white sugar. Other types of sugar you might commonly see on ingredient lists are fructose, lactose and maltose.  There are many more, like maltodextrin, dextrin, and malted barley.  The list goes on and on.
Why am I only targeting the sugar part of the food labels?  As I have come to understand my body and how it works, the main culprit in weight gain, and the inability to lose has to do with the amount of sugar I consume. Even though I would have stood tall in my affirmation that “I do not eat sugar”, I was not always aware of just how many of the foods I was consuming had sugar in the ingredients; even something as simple as my condiments and spices. I just recently went to a healthy food market and was going to buy lemon pepper seasoning and I almost just put it in my cart believing it was fine, but my instinct to check the ingredients took over, and sure enough, the 3rd and 4th item listed was dextrose and sugar. Really?? LEMON PEPPER!!!
Be very aware of all the items you purchase and make sure you are not buying food that is sold under the guise of healthy without first making sure that it is good for your body!
There is a difference.
