First of all, let’s talk about what exactly dehydration means. Well, according to dictionary.com, dehydration is defined by “an abnormal loss of water from the body, especially from illness or physical exertion”. Although this is very true, you don’t necessarily have to be sick or physically exhausted to be dehydrated. Dehydration can simply mean that your body is not getting enough water and/or fluids.
Did you know that your body is composed of 60-80% water? So, I think that it is completely normal that when your body is no longer getting those liquids that it needs, things start to go downhill. A whole whack of problems start arising when you body doesn’t get enough H20. Water is so crucial to your body’s well being!
Here are the 7 signs that your body is craving H20
Your Pee looks & smells a little funky
This is a totally obvious sign. If your pee is dark yellow and has a funny odour, this means that it is over concentrated with waste. By drinking more water, your body will be able to flush out toxins much more efficiently.
Your Mouth Feels Like a Deserted Island
Is your mouth is dry is and your tongue is little swollen, yep, your dehydrated. Get to the watering whole ASAP!
Your Muscles Have a Mind of Their Own
You know exactly what I am talking about! When your body’s fluids are low, your muscles tend to contract involuntarily. Weird isn’t it!?! You see, your body needs enough hydration and a proper electrolyte balance in order to allow your muscles to properly contract. Also, if you don’t have enough sodium and potassium, you will experience awfully painful muscle spasms. No thanks? Well, get some water in that gorgeous bod of yours!
Your Head is Pounding
Ok, so here’s the deal. Your body is constantly using it’s fluids to do it’s thing and make sure that everything is running smoothly. Remember, water is not the only thing that you should be consuming on a daily basis. Essential mineral salts and potassium are just as crucial. Why? Well, when hydration is low, a chemical reaction starts to form in the blood. This reaction is very sensitive to the brain so, it reacts with a headache. Think about it, the more water is eliminated, the more blood volume drops and the result is less and less oxygen flow to the brain. Result: One mega headache!
Have you ever stood up real fast and suddenly needed to sit right back down? That is because you probably had a low blood volume and low blood pressure leaving you feeling dizzy and light headed. Again, not enough water…
Got the Munchies?
Scanning the pantry for a snack but your not really hungry? Well, have you ever thought that perhaps your body is trying to tell you something? It’s thirsty!!! This is a very early sign of hydration but instead of reaching for some chips, dry a nice tall glass of water. You may be surprised.
Spending Too Much Time In the Outhouse?
Water helps pass bowel movements and it also helps soften your stool. Without an adequate amount of H20, your body is going to have a hell of a time “taking out the trash” if you know what I mean…
