Life is all about rules. What you can and cannot do… Eat this, don’t eat that, Oh but you must never ever eat those, Oh well, sometimes but, not all the time… Blah, Blah, Blah! Everyone is a critic and everyone has their own opinions on life’s “Health” rules. This bandwagon of fads will never stop rolling. I am sure that every day you are faced with new dos and don’ts. Personally, I think that all we need is a little structure in our lives to ensure that our relationship with food remains at peace with a good balance. So, instead of looking at strict food rules as punishment, think of those rules as part of YOUR plan. Create them to suit your personal lifestyle and habits. We don’t all have the time to prepare, bake and serve fancy meals three times a day. So, don’t set yourself up for failure with someone else’s ridiculously unbelievable health goals. We are all different. What works for some may not work for another. 
That being said, I have 6 simple rules that everyone can live by. Here we go: 

Can’t pronounce it? Then, don’t eat it…

This is one of my favorite rules! When visiting the local grocery store, I always read the nutritional facts and run through the ingredient lists of pre-packaged foods. When I don’t know what something is or have a hard time pronouncing it, I set it back down. Try it! You may be surprised at to how many items are set aside and how much money you save! Another good one that I once heard was: “If your Great Grandmother doesn’t know what it is, then don’t eat it!” 

Sugar is your Kryptonite

Do you know what sugar is in all its forms? If not, there is no better time but now to check it out! Sugar can be very sneaky and likes to hide in many different ways. Even in foods that we think are “healthy”. Be aware as to what the sugar content is in the foods that you are putting into your body so that you can limit your intake to a minimum. 
Don’t get me wrong, I still like to indulge on a slice of chocolate cake from time to time. But let’s be serious a little indulgence now and then, is not going to make me a diabetic. But, remember, an everyday treat is the start of a bad habit and don’t forget that there is no balance without pleasure.
 

Make the food you love

Meal time should be fun time! You must savor every moment from start to finish. It is supposed to be a pleasurable not dreadful tasks. So, if it is, you’re doing it all wrong. Start by adding some love to your food, you may start seeing results within your body too. 

Where is this from? 

It is so important that you know where your food is coming from, where it has been and what it has been in contact with. The food supply chain has quickly become a dark and scary place. So, if you are not sure, find out! Too much trouble? Then do without!

Breakfast time

Time and time again, we are told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day yet, most people still ignore this fact. Why? I will never know… Tsk, Tsk, Tsk! Your breakfast is what is going to set your pace and mood for the rest of the day. Make it count! Don’t fuel up on sugary crap or fattening garbage, fuel up on complex carbs, healthy fats and nutritious protein! A well balanced meal kicks the day off right.

Is this harmful or helpful? 

Last but not least, ask yourself this question before eating: “Is this going to harm my body or help my body?” So simple… It speaks for itself!
Easy enough right? No long thought process required. Just simple questions to ask yourself and voila! Before you know it you will be on the fast track to healthier habits!
